I have listened to several versions of this piece, and each one is a completely different tempo. If this one was just a few clicks faster it would be good, but at least here the recording captures the stateliness that Lully was trying to capture. Too slow and it drags. Too fast and the middle part is crazy for the ears and for the musicians, although it sounds like at a fast pace even the first few bars are very tricky to play together cleanly. Anyway. Good piece, top of its game.
Here’s a faster one. It just sounds slightly frantic to me and fails to capture the elegant harmonies and French-clipped eight notes that really make the overture soar. There’s no need to drive it like a machine – the music carries itself when taken at the right speed.
