Music of the Day

Written by Rameau around the time tales of the New World began to trickle back to Europe. It became all the rage to wildly mimic the different cultures for the entertainment of the court, as this recent opera production perfectly captures. I think I’ve watched it maybe six times in a row? I find it oddly captivating.

Rameau also made a version of the piece for harpsichord as part of a set of character pieces for his students.
