Émilie Marie Bouchaud, stage name Polaire, made quite a stir during her career starting in 1890 as a singer and actress. She is most famously known for having had a ridiculously small waist with the help of her corsets, with it being said that her waist never reached anything larger than 16 inches. Yet that wasn’t what earned her the title of the “ugliest woman in the world” by a New York newspaper. She wore heavy eye makeup, cut off her hair, had large hands, thick lips, a big nose, occasionally was seen with a nose ring, and traveled with a servant she called her “black slave.” This new and daring image was flaunted by her promoters and helped to kick start the fashion of the 20’s.
