The First Modern Gym Equipment


 

Dr Gustaf Zander, a fitness teacher in Sweden, invented the first modern gym equipment, with adjustable weights and levers, opening a training institute in 1865. He developed the idea of mechanically driven gymnastic apparatus, with which specific groups of muscles could be trained in exact dosages. After his machines had won prizes at various world exhibitions, Zander Institutes were set up all over the world, from Buenos Aires to Moscow.
