How To Cross a Moat


 

 

This knight is taking no chances: he is blowing up a floating ring before he crossed the moat, as if he were a toddler in the pool. The image is part of a book of war, a genre that provided ideas and specifications for devices used during the attack and defense of cities. Hilarious as this scene may be to us, the floaty was meant as a serious suggestion as to how to safely get a heavy knight across the water. When nobody is looking…
