Civil War Baseball

Baseball has been a popular sport since before the Civil War (it originated between the 17th and early 18th C), although it has somewhat evolved since then. The first baseballs were soft and hand-stitched, and because they were easily portable, many were brought to the Civil War battlefields. The one above was found in 1862 in Shiloh, Tennessee on the field of one of the Civil War’s bloodiest battles. The soldier who picked it up inscribed the ball with the phrase: “Picked Up on the Battle Field at Shiloh by G.F. Hellum.”
