In western China, movements in the earth’s crust have pushed up layers of dirt as one tectonic plate moves under another, creating these very beautiful stripes in the mountain side. Each stripe is a separate layer of soil, and are different colors because of the different air, plants, water, and other elements in the environment that impacted the chemical composition of the soil.
